…AKA the tribute video to big breasted women…..in slow motion.
Slowly but surely dispelling that “good guy that women love” rumor. Can’t wait for the reactions to this one.
**UPDATED**
I rarely feel compeled enough to write about videos. But I have to get some things off of my chest on this one.
Drake’s value has been slowly deteriorating in my eyes since I saw the first live performance vids of him at SUNY Purchase. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a fan of his work, but the more I see of him, the more let down I am.
Personally, I think his live shows aren’t that great. I read somewhere, (I think MauriceGarland.com) that Drake live reminded him of Nas live. Everyone knew the words to all the songs…but Nas (or Drake) really didn’t do too much on the stage. The crowd was the show.
As he is a new artist I understand he has a long way to go. I definitely don’t expect perfection, but with all the hype surrounding this guy, you would think his self-analyzation skills are good enough that he knows his weaknesses or have someone in his camp helping him out to let him know. And knowing those, you would think he would get some help developing his stage presence and live show. Then next thing you know this guy is on Hot 97 ‘freestyling’ off a Blackberry. I know he’s said he’s not a freestyler, but you would think he’d have memorized some rhymes for that occasion. Even Bow Wow did better than that on Rap City.
But with all that being said, I brushed those feelings aside and continued to hope for the best. Hoped that he would prove me wrong. Then I hear all these rumors swirling around regarding this guy’s label situation (and hype from Drake himself) only to find out that he’s signing with Young Money.
Woop de doo. Big shocker.
Thennnnnn, he releases this Best I Ever Had video, a song clearly targeted at women, (who from what I’ve heard make up a large part of the people attending his shows and supporting him) that stars 10 pairs of breasts.
Seriously?
Then that got me to thinking about how women are viewed in hip hop. It’s honestly never really bothered me before…I guess because I’ve never felt any attachment to the rappers that really really objectify women. Tip Drill didn’t bother me. Those strippers knew exactly what they were doing. They’re strippers for crying out loud. Plus Tip Drill was about….tip drills.
But watching that Drake video, a video that’s supposed to be a visual introduction to Drake the artist and not an ode to breasts, I suddenly found myself completely and utterly disgusted. I understand you may want eye candy and your occasional standard video chicks, but to shoot breasts bouncing in slow motion is so disrespectful to me and extremely juvenile.
Queen Latifah just spoke about Drake during the BET Awards aftershow in saying something along the lines of listening to his mixtape made her feel good as a woman.
I wonder what she feels like now.
I wonder why he wants his first real video (not counting Replacement Girl) to be remembered because of him telling girls to “take that D like the champions you are.”
That part actually made me laugh a little bit, I’m not gon lie.
Someone on Twitter said that it was a mixtape single, and that it didn’t matter what the video was like.
I say, the world isn’t treating this song like a mixtape single. It’s better than a mixtape single, as shown by the radio play and success he’s having, and he should treat it as such.
I blame Kanye.
Maybe I’m just buggin tho. Who knows.

Ok. So I saw the video for the first time earlier today, so I was sooo glad that you decided to blog about it. Personally, I feel like I must have been “out to lunch” when the whole hiphop/rnb world decided to crown Drake as the next biggest thing. Anyways…so I decided to listen to some songs, and of course “Best I Ever Had” is getting a lot of airplay, so I was slowly but surely starting to like Drake a little more everyday BUTTTTTT….all of that came to a screeching halt when I saw that video this morning.
Like seriously? It was ridiculous and just gross. To be such a HYPED UP rapper/singer and to release that as your first official video. The small ounce of respect I had for him is now GONE…for some reason I thought that he would be different. Maybe I just hoped that he would be different, since he was so talked about (HYPED UP) and because of all the. In my opinion, another one bites the dust.
(Dang I might make this a short blog post, lol. Thanks for getting my thoughts flowing…)
I totally agree with you. I feel like he got TOO much hype like with the publicity he gets, we expect something he is not or maybe he just hasnt gotten there yet. But when you placed in certain positions, you have no choice but to step up to the plate. Clearly he is not. Dont get me wrong his flow and lyrics are pretty sick and I am fan of his music but something is definitely lacking. I was so disappointed when I saw the video. He couldve developed a better concept to match the song. I feel like they just told him what the concept for the video and he was like o ok…no objection like that doesnt match the lyrics to my song. Thats why I dont watch videso because it sometimes ruins the song for me. I just hope his album lives up to the popularity his mixtape has brought him.
